Not so eency weency spider veins

Spider veins are damaged small vessels that appear on face or legs. They are usually not painful or harmful, but many patients want to have them removed for cosmetic reasons. 🕷

Why do we get spider veins and varicose veins? Well, inside our blood vessels are one-way valves that push blood back to the heart. Sometimes, these valves malfunction, and this can lead to pooling of the blood in gravity dependent areas. Genetics, lifestyle and occupation also play a role in the onset of varicosities. Jobs that require heavy lifting and prolonged standing are risks for developing varicosities. Pregnancy can also push the development of varicosities. 👶🏻

There are several maneuvers that we can do to prevent appearance of varicosities.

– Exercise your leg muscles! Walking makes our calf muscles squeeze the vessels to help push blood towards the heart. 🚶‍♂️🚶‍♀️

– Prop up your legs on two pillows at night. This helps bring the blood back to the heart via gravity.

– Wear pressure stockings. You need to get fitted for this pair of stockings otherwise, too tight or too loose fitting stockings will not do you any good!

Still unhappy? Well, visit your dermatologist for possible solutions. One of the quickest and most effective treatment for small veins is sclerotherapy. 💉💉💉 …

Sclerotherapy is an effective treatment for spider veins and small varicosities. We inject a solution inside the damaged vessel to close it. A bandage is wrapped around the leg for 5 to 7 days to help keep the vessel closed. Bruising is expected during healing. A follow-up treatment may also be warranted depending on the number and size of the varicosities.
